Electrical Contractors Light the Way For Construction Electrical Safety

Electrical contractors are construction professionals that specialize in extensive electrical and building services. They usually start out as construction electricians and later on work as electrical contractors after furthering their studies on building construction, engineering and financial management among many others. They can work as individuals or as part of a company specializing in electrical contracting and estimating. They present accurate bids to clients by using the electrical plans for the building. Once approved and accepted, electrical contractors will then hire other contractors, sub-contractors and electricians for the electrical inlay and wiring installation.

Electrical contractors are expected to have the qualifications and perform the following tasks:

  • responsible for understanding the legislation and regulations of electrical safety
  • ensure that the certificates of electrical safety are issued and completed
  • supervise workers throughout the course of their duties
  • ensure that all the details of the technical and business aspects of the contract is correct at all times
  • maintain a list of names of all your licensed workers
  • has extensive electrical and building services knowledge
  • at least five years of related experience
  • has proven ability to run own projects
  • has effective communication skills

Electrical contractors, aside from also having the skills of an electrician, must be licensed to be able to work in many states in the country. They are also referred to as a master electrician or a journeyman electrician who must have the following requirements to be granted a license to put up a business on electrical contracting:

  • 4 year completed apprenticeship program approved by a federal agency and federally certified state agency and at least one year of practical hands-on experience
  • satisfy the definition of a qualified journeyman, complete at least one year of practical hands-on experience and submit certifications on both qualifications
  • has a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering with 2 years of complete practical hands-on experience
  • has worked in the field of electrical contracting for at least five years
  • must submit a certification of work experience

However, before working as an electrical contractor and earning a license, you must have the qualifications of a master electrician. You must know how to assemble, install and wire the electrical systems in new homes and buildings. An electrician’s job covers many aspects of the construction of a building which includes the lighting, heating, power, air-conditioning, and refrigeration, among many other tasks that use electrical systems.

As an electrician, your work starts when the building is partially built, and you must follow the blueprints and the wiring diagrams. In addition, you will also be requested to install the electronic equipment and signal communication systems. The tools used by electricians include hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, knives, hacksaws, conduit benders, pipe threaders, power tools, and test meters, among many others.
