This course is not a diploma or degree. It is a license that qualifies you to maintain different types of aircraft in top working condition. So what is the real role of a person who has completed the Aircraft Maintenance Engineering course? Simply described, the licensed AME would be involved in repairing and maintaining the mechanical as well as avionics equipment of an aircraft so that it is safe to fly. This is an on-site job; that is at hangars on airports and you have to get your hands dirty in order to save lives.
The engineer has to inspect the mechanical and electronic equipment to ensure that they are in perfect working order. While doing so, the engineer has to use diagnostic equipment that has been approved and certified by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. If any part requires repairs or replacements, this has to be undertaken as well by the engineer.
An eye for detail and the capability to take the on-the-spot decision is a very important quality of an AME. Whether a part of the aircraft equipment is working properly, whether it needs minor repairs or whether it needs to be replaced immediately is a critical decision on which lives are dependent. So the course includes subjects about the structure, construction, working, maintenance and repairs of equipment.
TYPES OF JOBS AS AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE ENGINEERS
There are four different types of jobs a licensed AME can apply for, irrespective of the AME Institute the license has attended. They have some common duties and some unique aspects, for example:
This engineer or mechanic has to inspect, maintain and repair safety equipment while flying. This will involve auto-pilot system, altitude control system, weather-reporting system, etc.
This engineer is responsible for the optimum performance of propellers, engines, aircraft frame, skin, windows, doors, wings and all the avionics equipment as well.
Power Plant Engineer
These engineers have to take care of all the parts that do not come under the purview of the Airframe Engineer. This includes servicing of engines, power plants and sometimes propellers.
Aircraft and Power Plant Engineer
This engineer is responsible for every safety aspect of the aircraft. In fact, the engineer plays a combined role of an Airframe engineer and a Power Plant Engineer. This job requires experience in both types of jobs before the candidate can handle such a huge responsibility.
The courses of the Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Colleges are approved by the DGCA. Salaries would depend on the country in which the engineer is working and the level of experience.
